Why Choose a Major in the Health Care Field

Pursuing a major in the healthcare field offers more than just a career—it offers a calling. Majors in health sciences, psychology, social work, nursing, and pre-medical paths like biology and chemistry prepare students for impactful and fulfilling careers. These degrees and certifications come with significant benefits, including:

1. A Clear Career Path: The healthcare industry provides a well-defined career trajectory with various opportunities for advancement and specialization.

2. An Impressive Job Outlook: Healthcare professionals are in high demand, with a promising job market and a range of employment options.

3. A Direct Impact on Others: Working in health care allows professionals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients, improving their overall well-being.

Prospective students can choose from a multitude of positions, specialties, and work settings, ensuring they find a niche that aligns with their interests and provides a sense of fulfillment.

Why Choose a Career in Addiction

Addiction profoundly affects every aspect of a patient’s life, including their physical and mental health, relationships, job prospects, and overall quality of life. Professionals in the field of substance abuse help patients build a brighter future, free from drugs and alcohol. This work is invaluable to each individual they assist, offering healthcare, mental health counseling, and social services that support life-changing recoveries.

Substance abuse is a significant problem in the United States, with millions of individuals requiring treatment each year. Sadly, only a fraction of those in need receive the necessary care. The demand for a new generation of addiction professionals is critical. Jobs in substance abuse and mental health counseling are projected to grow by 22% from 2018 to 2028.

Addiction treatment encompasses a range of professional roles, each requiring different levels of expertise. Professionals can find employment in hospitals, private practices, rehabilitation facilities, community centers, nonprofit organizations, and more. At facilities like Clean And Recovery, a diverse team of medical doctors, substance abuse counselors, mental health counselors, substance abuse nurses, and behavioral health technicians work together to provide comprehensive care. Additionally, teletherapy is emerging as a popular option.

Scholarships and Resources Available for Students

To support the increasing need for qualified substance abuse and mental health professionals, several scholarships and academic resources are available. These opportunities can help students pursue healthcare careers in these fields. One such scholarship is:

The Clean And Recovery Care Scholarship

Clean And Recovery is committed to providing exceptional services at our alcohol and drug rehab facilities while also offering unique opportunities for education and personal development. In the past, we have offered a $1,000 scholarship to students pursuing medical-related courses of study. Although the scholarship program ended in 2019, it has supported students like Serina Sha on their educational journeys.

The scholarship application process often involves sharing personal recovery stories, accounts of family addiction or mental health conditions, and how these experiences have inspired a career in health care.

Please note that the availability and requirements of scholarships may vary, so it’s essential to explore specific scholarships and their respective application processes.

Past Winner

Serina Sha, the recipient of Clean And Recovery Health Care Scholarship in 2019, was awarded $1,000 to support her educational expenses. Currently enrolled in a dual bachelor and doctor of osteopathic medicine program at Nova Southeastern University, Serina aspires to become a psychiatrist, practicing in either a hospital or private setting.

In addition to her interest in clinical psychiatry, Serina is passionate about working as a public health professional with esteemed organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From a research perspective, she aims to contribute to the existing literature on evidence-based programs and treatment, particularly in collaboration with organizations like the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Serina’s scholarship application included a personal essay that delved into her experiences in the medical field, specifically regarding mental health and addiction. In her essay, she eloquently expressed, “Medicine, whether it’s orthopedics or psychiatry, is simply about retrieving the patient’s confidence.”

She expressed her gratitude to Clean And Recovery, stating, “Because of Clean And Recovery’s help, I am able to focus more on my academic success instead of my financial obligations.”

With a personal connection to mental health, physical health, and addiction, Serina is deeply committed to empowering individuals to maintain their well-being through psychiatric care. Clean And Recovery eagerly anticipate the positive impact Serina will have on the world through her educational pursuits.
